Hank Aaron Baseball Cards
For a lot of people, Hank Aaron will always be considered the All-Time Home Run King. In early 1974, Henry Louis Aaron passed Babe Ruth when he hit his 715th home run off the Dodgers’ Al Downing.
While not as flashy as his contemporaries Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, Aaron proved that slow and steady wins the race. Aaron never hit 50 homers in a season, yet his 756 home run total stood as the record for 33 years.
Recognizing his potential, Topps issued Aaron’s only card in 1954. Thus, card #128 in the 1954 Topps set is the one and only Hank Aaron rookie card. His only Bowman card appears in the 1955 series but that card’s value pales in comparison.
One of the more bizarre uncorrected error appears on Aaron’s 1957 Topps card. Despite winning the National League MVP in ’57, no one at Topps noticed that the 1957 Aaron has the photo reversed and pictures Hank batting left handed.
Aaron is included in every Topps issue from 1954 to 1976. His proficiency in Home Runs, RBIs and Batting made him a staple on Topps Leader cards throughout the 1960s.
Some of the tougher Aaron regional issues include the 1954 Johnston Cookies Braves, 1954 Spic and Span Braves, 1958 Hires Root Beer, 1957 Swift Meats and the 1965 – 1969 Kahn’s Wieners cards.
Though certainly not the most valuable, my favorite Aaron card is the 1973 #1 card featuring Babe Ruth, Aaron and Willie Mays (at the time, #1, 2 and 3 on the All-Time Home Run list). This was the first time the three legends shared a single card.
